Russ Hope – Lead Writer

What do you do?

I write words. But first, I sweat the big stuff – the whys and the what-ifs. Then I craft the message, sentence-by-sentence.

Why do you do it?

It started with a TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I watched that show every week for years. One day I realised that even though the writers kept changing, the characters always sounded like themselves . I wanted to know how that could be. So I started pulling the dialogue apart, looking for patterns. Soon I was experimenting with syntax and tinkering with words to create moods and imply personalities and explain ideas. Eventually it became my job.

What are you most proud of?

I’m a sucker for results. I like to crack problems and open up new opportunities for people. So far I’ve particularly enjoyed helping a government department talk to 280,000 civil servants about education, and writing a pub quiz for a banking boss.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I listen to music, play video games and drink coffee. Sometimes I do other work, like lecturing at universities and writing books .

What kind of writing gets you excited?

Anything that’s pithy or strange or takes me into a world I’ve never seen before. Lyrics Haiku Breaking Bad.
